Oh Boy!
One of the best things about being a Jeep Wrangler owner, is throwing the top down and going for a drive. It’s not important to have a destination or an errand to do. It’s important to just get in the Jeep and go. On most of our weekend rides, I am a passenger. I relax in the back seat and enjoy the sunshine. So was the case on the 4th of July. Not only is it America’s birthday but, it is also Taylor’s birthday. We had planned on going on a drive to Sanibel. We opted to do this for lunch as we found a location to try. Oh Boy!
Our plan was to visit Schnapper’s Hots on Sanibel. They are a primarily hot dog serving location, located on Sanibel. Their tag line is Oh Boy! and the reviews seemed to be pretty good. We arrived at about 1:00pm to a packed house. After finding a parking spot, we ventured into the restaurant. This did not last long as the interior is about as small as a bathroom. I got all of the orders and stayed inside to order. This has the look and feel of a good ol’ home town location. Add this to the fact that it’s on Sanibel, and its a match made in heaven. After waiting to order, and waiting for our food, we finally began to eat at about 1:30pm.
Both Mommy and Taylor got hot dogs but, as I do not eat hot dogs, I opted for a BLT. But, this was ordered minus the bacon, add cheese. So, I had a cheese, tomato and lettuce sandwich. Yes, this sounds borning, plain and simple. And it certainly was all of those things. Even so, it really wasn’t bad. The bread was toasted however, not to the point of melting the cheese. This is something that I eat variants of pretty frequently and I enjoy. The lettuce & tomato were both fresh and provided a nice addition to the bread and cheese. This was simple and served the purpose. We had eaten a big breakfast and were planning on Michelbob’s for dinner.
In addition to the sandwich, we got a large order of fries. This was more than enough for the 3 of us to share. I found these fries to be pretty boring. They lacked flavor and were fried up a little bit too much for my liking. These are referred to as ‘Boardwalk Fries.’ Adding some ketchup to these made them better, and of course we had no problem finishing them, but, I wouldn’t need to have them again. While these are fresh cut, I just really wasn’t digging them. We also ordered a root beer float to share however, I only got to try a bit of the ice cream that was left. So, it’s unfair for me to really judge this.
Schnapper’s Hots is probably some where I will never go again. While we really do not frequent Sanibel, I didn’t think the food was that good to go back to. The wait staff was great however, the lack of seating and small interior, made it quite difficut. We ended up eating on a bench outside. Luckily, it was the 4th and it wasn’t raining so this worked. Overall, I found the food to be average – nothing great but decent enough. Even though the food wasn’t the best, its the memories that count. And a Jeep ride, on the 4th of July, is enough for me to say Oh Boy!
